Synopsis.
In the May edition of
OEKOTEST (Ecotest) a German environmental consumer reports magazine,
test were run on garments to see if PFOA’s could be extracted using
accepted test methods where harsh ethanol based solvents are applied. If
there is any instability of the fluorochemical at all, traces will be
found in the test solution.
Test process and
results.
Four brand name
garments (Arc’teryx, Berghaus, etc) were purchased at retail and the
test was carried out in a controlled laboratory environment. In all
cases, similar traces of PFOA’s were detected, but were all considered
to be acceptable by OEKOTEST.
As a follow up test,
Granger’s spray on waterproofing and two other after market brands were
applied to raw fabric and the same test was made. On the two other
brands, similar traces were found but were considered as satisfactory.
The Granger’s product was the only product
tested (both garment and aftermarket) that yielded zero
trace levels of PFOA’s.
This proves that Granger’s product is not only far more
effective that original factory applied DWR’s, but emits no PFOA’s. It
is perfectly safe.
The test (in German) is
published in the May edition on
www.oekotest.de
It is important to note
that even though trace levels of PFOA’s were extracted from the test
garments, according to the EPA, there is still nothing to suggest that
they are harmful. The test method is extremely harsh and is unlikely to
be duplicated in normal garment usage.
